Bushra Asghar
Bushra Asghar (she/her) is an experienced community organizer and passionate advocate for youth, climate justice, and human rights. Born into an expat family in Saudi Arabia and now part of the South Asian diaspora in Canada, Bushra has lived in Pakistan, Canada, Saudi Arabia, the USA, and Switzerland. Her diverse experiences have shaped her unique perspective on global and local issues.
Bushra holds a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in political science from Algoma University and a master's in international relations/political science from the Graduate Institute in Geneva. She has a proven track record in advocacy and leadership, having worked on several projects aimed at creating a positive impact. Notably, she has lobbied the federal government for the creation of a national Youth Climate Corps and developed harassment complaint systems at post-secondary institutions to protect students from discrimination, harassment, and violence.
In addition to her policy work, Bushra has held various leadership roles, including serving as the President of the Algoma University Students' Union, and as a Chief of Staff at a Silicon Valley tech startup. She has also been deeply involved in electoral organizing, working on campaigns to increase youth voter turnout during the 43rd Canadian Federal Election and supporting grassroots mobilization efforts with organizations such as Climate Justice Toronto, and 350Canada.
Bushra’s commitment to social justice, equity, and community building drives her work. She is dedicated to fostering inclusive spaces and advancing progressive policies that support democratic freedoms, labour rights, and human rights. When not working on advocacy campaigns, Bushra enjoys reading science fiction stories, learning to cook new cuisines, listening to sufi music, writing poetry, and organizing community dinners. She is driven by the belief that strong, vibrant communities are the foundation of lasting change.
